In the first trimester, the fifth graders created exaggerated figures by tracing around their hands and creating a drawing incorporating them. They have also drawn pumpkins from a still life, adding their imagination to their contour drawing. Leading up to this they drew three views of an object and combined the images into a collage. They also created miniature sculptures from model magic which were displayed until Christmas vacation.
During the second trimester students have created an Egyptian hieroglyph of their name on a slab of terracotta clay and accompanied it with a sculpture. This tied into the Ancient Civilization unit being studied in Social Studies unit. Students are soon to create a scratchboard Greek vase by coloring a paper with craypas, and painting over it with a black paintand ink mixture. They will cut out their vase shape and draw in a motif and symbolism which relates to their life. Stayed tuned. Lots of fun projects are on the horizon.
