I. Impact Study to Modify Land use plan
A. Present Land Use Plan for Detention Basin at Windham High School
In 1983 the Windham primary school was built and along with it the detention basin was developed. The site was originally an old field ecosystem with an intermittent stream flowing through. The detention basin facilitates snow melt, precipitation runoff from the roads and parking lots, effluent from the sewage treatment facility, and is a buffer from water draining directly into the Pleasant River which is part of the Presumscot Watershed. This site is going through the natural process of succession and may need managed to keep it delineated as a wetland. Any future changes to the site must be applied for through the appropriate process and procedure.B. Proposed Modification to Land Use PlanThe following individuals are resources and can help answer questions about the site; Mr. Tim Loring, Facilities Manager for Windham School District, Mr. Battaglia-Wetland Scientist, and Bill Hanson-Senior Field Biologist for Florida Power and Light. Questions for these individuals should be e-mailed directly to our site by simply clicking on the e-mail us button.
The modification that we seek will hopefully increase the Functional Capactiy of the Detention Basin. These will include the following:
1. Debris removal to enhance sunlight exposure to forest floor
2. Design and build a trail system that is handicapped accessible
3. A pier that extends out 10ft into the pondMap before Map after
II- Impact study componentsAs 10th grade Biology students you will be asked to complete a Land Use Management Plan for the Biosite. This will require that you utilize all the data collected by 9th grade Earth Science students along with additional information you will gather about the living organism that occupy the site.
To accomplish this task you will need to follow the steps listed at the site Virtual Field Trip. Good Luck!
You will be working with other students in small groups to complete your project. It is important that you remember all the skills discussed earlier this year about how to work in a group. This includes topics like: assigning each member specific jobs, be aware of proper group etiquette in what is said, and make sure that you use the ideas taughts about conflict resolution.
