Sample Dissections
Learning how to use the dissecting equipment is an important skill that must be mastered if you hope to complete the biology dissections in the allotted time. To assist you in learning how to use these tools you will be practicing with the following items:
Using the scalpel cut off a 7 cm. Wedge and remove the skin from the small piece you have (Use the scalpel for this)
Using the scalpel (light touch) cut a transverse (cross cut) very thin slice
Using the scalpel (moderate touch) cut the wedge saggital (Long cut)
Using the scalpel and tweezers cut and remove a very thin layer of skin
Using the scalpel and tweezers cut and remove a wedge from the tomato.
Using the fine tweezers remove a seed from the inside of the tomato and carefully cut it in half
Using the scissors try cutting a piece that is 0.5 cm square from the tomato
Using the scalpel (light to moderate touch) try removing the external layers of the skin from the pulp like material under it.
Using the scalpel cut the wedge in half using a transverse (cross cut). Try not to squash the wedge while cutting.
Describe what it looks like inside the wedge of orange.
4. Clean your instruments and the dissecting tray. Make sure that all equipment is dry before you put it back.
