Samantha Smith  was a ten year old girl who was very brave at her age.  Samantha had worried about Russia and the United States gettting into a nuclear war.  She wondered if they would votte to have a war or not, or if they planed on not to have the war what were they going to do?  Samantha was tired of just wondering and not getting an answer so she decided to write a letter to Mr. Andropov (Soviet leader) asking for peace.

Samantha wrote this letter with a lot of courage hoping to get a reply soon.  Sam had heard nothing for about three weeks.  About a week had gone by and she recieved a letter the mail. It read:

   "Samantha Smith Manchester, Maine USA

"Dear Samanthat Smith, I recieved your letter, which is like many others that have reached me recently  form your country and from other countries around the world.

It seems to me - I can tell by your letter- that you are courageous and honest girl, resembling Becky, the friend of  Tom  Sawyer in the famous book of your compatriot Mark Twain.  This is well known and lead in our country by all boys and girls."

This  question was one of the most important of those every thinking man can pose.  The soviet Union tried to everything poissble so that there would be no nuclear war. No wants war!

Samanthat was invited to go to there country if her parents would let her.

News reporters were all around her front lawn.  On July 7, 1983 Sam left to go to Moscow. She she spent two weeks doing many attivities. Throughout her entire trips was followed her every step.

Samantha then was tobecome a moive star. as she would head off to Hollywood where she would take part in the movie Lime street as she wold play part as Rober Wagner's daughter.

On the day of August 25, 1985 samanthat andr father were flying back to maine a had been filming a part o the Lime street show in london.  On the approach  to Auburn, MAine the plane missed the runway by 200 yards and crashed into the nearby woods.  Everyone on board, including six other passengers and the crew, died. Samantha was 13.

The day of August 28 there was a funeral.there was many hundreds of people that didnt even know her.  People spoke and had speeches about this amazing girl at only the age of 13.
