We have been working on our "Blue Ice on-line Project". We have researched polar animals and have written reports and drawn pictures of them. Here is our work!

The Blue Whale

By Sarah

The Blue Whale can grow up to be  80 feet long and 130 tons. It  is the largest and loudest animal on earth. It has blue and gray skin with white and  gray specks. The under belly has brown, yellow and gray spots.  The Blue Whale has 2 blow holes about 11 inches long.  It can shoot water 40 - 50 inches above the surface of the water.
The Blue Whale is found worldwide.  It likes salt water.  It also lives near the surface of the water so it can get air whenever it needs it.  Blue Whales have one baby at a time.  They are mammals so they do not lay eggs.  You can find the Blue Whale in any ocean in the world, especially the Pacific.
The Blue whale is also part of the food chain.  It eats small fish in the ocean like krill and plankton.  The only thing that eats the Blue Whale is humans even though it is illegal.

Rockhopper Penguin
By Tulleigh
The Rockhopper penguin is one of the crested penguins. Its genus is Eudyptes, and its scientific name is Eudyptes chrysocome. They are called rockhoppers because they hop from rock to rock. All Rockhopper penguins live in the Southern Hemisphere. They are found in the sub-arctic islands as well as on the Antarctic coastline.
The Rockhopper is the smallest of the crested penguins. The average size of the Rockhopper is between 16 and 18 inches long. They can get as high as 22 inches. They weigh six pounds on average. They have a droopy feathery crest, which is black through the middle and has a yellow streak through the sides. They have an orange-red bill and two red eyes. Their bellies are white, but the rest of the body is black. The male and female are similar, but the male is taller. They have a big head, thick neck, flipper-like wings and webbed feet.
The prey of the Rockhopper is mostly krill, plankton, and squid. They are carnivores and find their food in the ocean. The predators of this penguin are Blue sharks, Leopard seals and fur seals. At times, other birds such as Skuas, Petrels and Dominican gulls eat the eggs of the Rockhopper.
These birds breed from October to April in vast colonies. They most times lay two eggs, but only incubate and hatch one. Both parents then take care of the chick that lives.

The Leopard Seal
By: Bradley

The leopard seal has large spots on its skin, so it is named after the jungle cat with spots. Its sleek body is built for speed in the water. The leopard seal has a long flexible neck and a wide mouth for grasping the penguins it eats. It has large eyes so it can find its prey under the water. They also have powerful teeth for ripping flesh.
Leopard seal pups feed on krill. When they become adults, they are usually about 12 feet in length. They also have large front flippers.         Leopard seals live on the pack ice edges around Antarctica.
It is believed that there may be over 200,000 leopard seals. They have been known to live for over 26 years.
Leopard seals not only eat penguins but also sea birds, small seals, cephalopods, fish, and krill. The killer whale is the only known predator. Female leopard seals have their young between November and December on the ice.

Plankton
By Harrison Brown

Plankton is one of the tiniest things on the face of the earth. It is a microscopic animal or plant. It is also named after the greek word planktos and it's enemy is the krill. It eats anything that gets caught in its trap. It has no wings or claws and without plankton nothing on earth would live. Very intresting is it. Plankton comes in many shapes and sizes. Also somtimes it can look like crabs or lobsters. It can also make webs underwater. They are see through so the food that the type of plankton eats doesn't notice. Plankton eats sand particles and dirt and other things. Plankton can be bacteria. They have no ability to swim. Also plankton can be a jellyfish. Also plankton provide food for other small living orginizams. And last but not least plankton can be moved to shoreby very strong currents so.

The Killer Whale
By Nathan
Killer whales, or orcas, are found in all the words’ oceans, but nowhere are there more accessible for viewing and studying   than   in   Canada’s west coast waters.
L98 has been spending   most of his time in   Muchalant Inlet with occasional short visits to dock in gold  River.
The killer whale eats many kinds of animals like seals, squid, fish and plankton.  Killer whales can grow up to be 27-33 feet (8-10) long, weighing more than 8,000-12,000 pounds (3,600-5,400kg) the male is larger than the female.

The Adele Penguin Report
By Jessicca

My Adele Penguins average size is: Females 3.9 and Males 4.4 to 5.4 KG. Their usual
habitat is slide on their belly’s to go to a certain place. There are 18 types of penguins that I know of and their  predator is a seal. I don’t really know what they eat but what I’m thinking of is probably small fish and krill and another thing that I know is what they do is when they get their pray is they go near the edge slowly and carefully push a penguin off and if the penguin is spinning around in circles then that means that there’s a shark and if the penguin just stays there then that means that they can jump in and get their food that they need for their babies.

The Crabeater Seal
By: Alex
The Crabeater Seal is very cool. It has brown and tan fur. Believe it or not, the Crabeater Seal doesn’t eat crabs.
There can be a population of Crabeater Seals ranging from 12 to 75 million seals! The average Crabeater Seal can weigh 400 kilograms  and be as long as 2.5meters (97 inches)!
Crabeater Seals molt in January and February. They mostly stay on the pack ice while doing this. Female Crabeater Seals only give birth to one seal pup. The Crabeater Seal mainly feeds on krill. Then the Leopard Seals feed on the Crabeater Seals, mainly on the seal pups. It is almost always a sad ending for the Crabeater Seal.

The Leopard Seal
By: Connor

The male leopard seal can grow up to 5 feet long. The female leopard seal can grow up to 6 feet long. The male leopard seal can weigh up to 250-300 lbs.  The leopard seals description is black on top and gray on the bottom. It all so has dark black spots all over the body.
The prey or the leopard seal is 4 kinds of penguins, crabeater  seal and fish.

The leopard seal teeth are 2.3 cm long to 1 inch. The full grown leopard seal has two enemies, man and killer whales. The baby leopard seals have three enemies: man, killer whales and full grown seals.

Emperor Penguin
By Allie
The Emperor Penguin is the largest penguin. It can grow up to 50 inches tall and can weigh from 40 to 100 pounds. The feathers grow to be very thick to protect them from freezing. They can live up to 20 years old which makes them the longest living penguin.
The Emperor Penguin doesn’t have a big nest because it stays on sea ice during breeding season. The female lays the egg and leaves for 9 weeks and comes back when the egg hatches. The males huddle together with the egg so they can stay warm. If they don’t huddle then they will die from the cold. They take turns in the middle of the group because that’s the warmest. When the female comes back the male goes off and leaves the baby with the female.
Emperor penguins eat fish, squid, and krill. They have short wings that help them dive up to 900 feet deep to catch their food. They can swim up to 18 kilometers per hour .Penguins need to look out for seals because they eat them.

The Antarctic Krill
By Allison
The Antarctic Krill is just about two inches long. The female lays about 2,000-3,000 eggs at once. The eggs sink down to the bottom of the ocean floor.
The krill has lots of predators .some of them are The Adelie penguin, and other types of penguins and whales and seals.
It eats plankton. and other kinds of krill. It lives in the deep sea and on the shore in small puddles.

The Adelie Penguin
By Elaine

Adelies breed on open rocks all around the Antarctic.  The total number of pairs of Adelie penguins is 2,500.  Adelie penguins eat mostly krill - which makes up 99%  of their diet.  For water they eat snow that melts in their mouths.  They weigh 5.0 kg and their height is 70 cm.
The Adelie penguin swims to Elephant Island in the winter.  They leave their babies for almost two weeks at a time.  They leave their babies to go catch food for themselves and the babies.  While the parents are gone, the babies huddle into large groups of 20-40 babies.  They huddle together for safety against predators.  When summer comes they go back to Antarctica and the parents and babies make new nests.
The Adelie penguin stand near the shoreline waiting for one of them to push another penguin in to see if the water is safe from leopard seals.  If the penguin they pushed in doesn't come back up then none of them go in the water and they back away.  If he does come up, they all jump in at once.
The Adelie swim in groups of 5 to 8 when they go fishing.  For excitement they flap one of their wings up in the air!    The Adelie penguinstoboggan to get around because it's faster than walking.  They can swim under water for 5-10 minutes and come up for a quick breath and then they go back down.

The King penguin is three feet tall.It weighs 45 to 50 pounds. The King penguin lives on the It has coasts of Antarctica. It looks like a small Emperor penguin. It can be fierce if you bug it.
It has a bule back, grey eyes,a white belly and a long beak. The King penguin has a golden outline on its sides and his head.It eats plankton, squid and small fish.It lays eggs every year.It does not build a nest.
A King penuin can swim up to six miles per hour! They run on land they do not hop on land.If another penguin comes near one of there eggs they slap them! They keep the eggs under their belly.

The Blue Whale
By: Mckayla
The Blue Whale species/Genus is Balaen Musculus. It is said to be the largest animal that ever lived! 110 feet long to be exact! It is at the top of the food chain. No one eats the blue whale because of its size. Even the leopard seal doesn’t attack it!
The blue whale is a bluish gray color. It is very long. It has short fins for its size. It lives in the ocean. It eats krill through its baleen. Baleen is like the bottom of a broom.
People used to hunt blue whales. Then they came close to extinction. Now its illegal to hunt blue whales. The reason people used to hunt blue whales was they had 2,000 pounds of blubber and people had many uses for the blubber such as making perfume.

The Chinstrap Penguin
By: Jen Holman

The Chinstrap penguin got its name from the thin black strip on its chin.  The Chinstrap has red brown eyes, top of head and back are black.  The legs and feet are pink with black soles.  It grows to be 28 to 30 inches tall and it weighs 8 to 14 lbs.  It lives in Antarctica  The leopard seal, skua, sheathbills and killer whales eat the penguins. On the circum polar and the peninsula it eats small fish, squid and krill.
Penguins have wings but they are called flippers and do not fly but they fly through the water.  When they jump out they jump 7 feet high on to land.  On land the penguins waddle and toboggan.  The Chinstrap and other penguins have feathers but they look like little scales.  Penguins live in the ocean most of the time.  They get on land and mate then have a nest with up to two eggs
The coloration of the penguins blend in with the sky and the sea.  The Chinstrap lays eggs a month after the Adelie.  After awhile people went to Antarctica and brought penguins to the U.S. Then penguins went to zoos so people can see them.  But the Chinstrap and other penguins do not like the heat.  They like the cold and the zoos must be careful with the penguins. By now there are a lot of penguins in the U.S., even the Chinstrap

It has no blood .He can carry enough oxygen with out the red cells .They feed on krill .And
Copepod sand and other fish.  It has a large toothy mouth and that is why he is called the crocodile fish by 19th Century whalers and the Ice fish lives in Antarctica.

The Emperor penguin
By Ryan
The Emperor penguin stands over 3 1/2 feet tall and averages 80 to 90 lbs. They are the longest lived of the penguin with a life span of up to 50 years old. In mid may the female lays one egg. The eggs  hatch in mid July The Emperor penguin colors of the emperor penguin are  black  yellow and white The emperor penguin is 66 inches tall the male takes the egg  and  puts it onto his feet and keeps them warm. The female goes to find food to eat and returns in two months. The female takes the chick and covers it  with her pouch.  Then the male goes to get food.

Elephant Seal
By Kaitlin
The Elephant seal’s scientific name is The Miroungaleonia. This huge four ton, silvery-skinned, sea –Mammal with stout squared-off head a small trunk like nose, and flippers. It’s habitat is the rocky shores of Antarctica and subantarctic islands. The southern Elephant seal gets it’s name for being super big and Having a nose with a small trunk. Males, also called bulls, use these trunks to fight for breeding rights. The heavy-weights of seal family, elephant seals can barely move on land –flippers make these creatures swift and power swimmers, but they aren’t strong enough to lift a seal body off the ground much. Large fishes,  squid and an ocasional penguin fall prey to the elephant seals, who have few if any predators.

Macaroni Penguin
By:Ryan

The Macaroni Penguin is twenty-seven inches long and can weigh up to 11 pounds. They have a population of Twelve-million pairs and are largest of all crested penguins.

Like all penguins, they lay two eggs. The second egg has very slim chances of surviving and is smaller than the first.the male sits on the eggs while the female hunts for food.

The Macaroni is found and related to both the Rockhopper and the Chinstrap. The macaronis has only one enemy, the Leapordseal. When attacked they swim/run in the rocks and hide. They have little feathers above there eyes that look like hair. They eat Plankton and other small fish.

The Emperor Penguin
By Evan
The Emperor Penguin is one of many species of penguins in Antarctica, and I will tell you a lot about the Emperor penguin.

Johann Forster, a naturalist, discovered Emperor Penguins over a hundred years ago.  The scientific name for Emperor Penguins is aptenodytes forsteri which came from Johann Forster's name.  Emperor Penguins are closely related to the King Penguins.  The Emperor Penguin likes to dive in the icy Antarctic waters and can dive up to 870 feet deep.

The Emperor Penguin's average weight is 66 pounds.  They are large penguins and walk very slowly because they are so big.  The Emperor penguin uses its beak as an ice pick to get up steep slopes.  Its back and head are black but its stomach is white.  The emperor penguin's ear, a small spot on its beak, and upper breast is a yellow-orange color. The under side of its flippers is white.  The Emperor has two flippers that help it swim, and it also has feathers on its feet, the bottom of its bill and its outer sides.  The average height of an Emperor is 44 inches. The baby chicks of an Emperor penguin are gray and black colored.

The Emperor penguin does not migrate in the winter.  The Emperor's habitat is on pack ice surrounding the shoreline of Antarctica.  It's the only species to reproduce in the winters of Antarctica.  Some Emperor penguin colonies can be found in the shelter of icebergs, islands, costal ice cliffs, or steep hills.  The female Emperor lays one egg onto her feet and puts it on the male's feet for him to incubate.  The Emperor's stomach hangs over the egg to keep it warm.  The Emperor penguins huddle together and keep their backs to the wind to help keep all of the eggs warm.

The Emperor penguin eats crustaceans, shoaling fish, and squid.  The Emperors are preyed upon by Leopard seals, and the Leopard seal eats 15 penguins a day.  The leopard seal tries to eat penguins that are sick because a healthy Emperor penguin can out swim the Leopard seal.  Killer Whales also eat Emperor penguins.

The Chinstrap Pengiun
By Ben
The Chinstrap Penguin has a population of approximately 7 million pairs.  You can find these penguins at the Antarctica peninsula and southern islands.  Their feathers are unwettable so
they are insulated from the cold.  They can swim more then 20 kilometers per hour.  Also Chinstrap penguins can dive 275 feet deep into the water.  They can stay under the water for 15-20 minutes without coming to the surface for air.
The Chinstrap Penguin can grow up to 27 inches tall.   It weighs from 9-11 pounds when it is fully grown. The Chinstrap's diet is krill and other fish.
The Chinstrap nests are on snow free ground to keep their babies warm.  The adult Chinstrap's enemy is the Leopard Seal.  Predators of the baby chinstrap are the fully grown Sheatbills and Brown Skua.
The Chinstrap Penguin has survived in the cold climate of Antarctica for many years.

The Chinstrap Penguin
By Colin Z.
The chin strap penguin is black with a white stomach and a strap of black on its chin.  That is how it got its name the chin strap penguin.  It also has very good vision.  They are one of the largest penguins in the world!  They can weigh up to 15 lbs.  The chin strap penguin can get up to 27 inches tall too!
Its predators are the leopard seal and skuas.  They eat fish and small fish and squid.  In order to protect itself they have to push a penguin into the water if it doesn’t get eaten its safe!  Chinstrap babies cannot eat food whole, so they regurgitate their food for their young.
The chinstrap penguin lives on the shores of Antarctica.  It cannot live more than 1 mile off shore.  There can be up to 1,000,000 Chinstraps in one colony!
They are very fast swimmers!  It can out run a leopard seal by a lot! They can also dive as deep as 900 meters!  Under water penguins can travel up to 25 Km/h!  They can stay under water for 20-30 minutes!

    The Leopard Seal
By Erin
The Leopard Seal male is 241-388 cm. Long.  The female is 256-320 cm long.  It has flippers to swim with.  The Leopard Seal also has spots and sharp teeth to tear its food with.  Their color is grayish- light brown.
The Leopard Seal’s habitat is swimming in the icy cold waters, it looks in the waters for its food.  The mother spends most of her time nursing her pups after they are first born.
The Leopard Seal’s predators are humans.  Humans eat them and use their skin to keep warm.  The food that the Leopard Seal eats is penguins, fish, krill and smaller seals.  The Leopard Seal’s skin is warm and smooth.  That makes it easier to swim in the icy water.

It also eats fish and stuff like that. The Emperor the only penguins that never set foot on dry land. the Emperor are insulated in part by a dense notework fathers-about 70 feathers per square inch.  The Emperor penguins lay singel eggs during the cold time of the year.Emperor penguin establish looes breeding colonones on the pack ice surronding the Antaceita continent.

Rock Hopper Penguin
By Marissa

The rockhopper penguin has a sharp pointy beak, claws, it has hair on the back of it head and also a short neck. It also has  a black head and a black neck. It has a white chest, abdomen, and legs, Yellow head crest and a red-orange beak and eyes.It also has pink feet. It is 22 inches tall and weighs 6 lbs. My penguin lives in the Frankland  Island in Sub Antarctic waters. The Rockhopper penguin lays up to 2 eggs. The bigger one has a better chance of  servival. The Rockhopper penguin eats lantorn fish  and occasionally squid. The Rockhoppers’ predators are blue sharks, Leopard seals, and Fur Seals. An interesting fact is when they are resting, they stand upright and propping themselves on their short tails. When sleeping, they lean forward and rest on their abdomen and chest.

Chinstrap penguin
by Taylor
The chinstraps are twenty seven inches and they  weigh ten-elven pounds.Their habitat is high snow free ground. Their predators are Leopard seal, Sheath billsand the BrownSkua. They eat Krill and fish.Chinstraps get their names from the  thin line which circles from behind the other one eye under the chin to behind the other eye much like a strap on a helmet. They have a black beck  and a white and  black body. They lay two eggs in November or December and the chicks fled at about seven to eight weeks in late February andearly March. The Chinstrap feeds by pursuit -divinng for prey close to their breeding colonies.Diving effort is usually concentrated near mid night and  noon and dives typically last less than a minute and are seldom more than 200 feet  deep. Like most peguins  Chinstrap using  their flippers to fly at speeds up to 20 miles per hour on land.Chinstras often toboggan an their stomachs propelling
themselves by their feet and flippers.

Wendell Seal
By Janelle
They have V shaped nostles and they close when animals are at rest. They have whiskers that sense of touch. They have sharp teeth to scrap holes to breath from. they have teeth to eat from hard stuff. They have fur to protect them form the water.
At birth they are about 1.5m long and weigh about 29kg. Young pups can be recognized by the the presence of the umbilicus. withch falls 10 days of age. the pups gain about 10 to 15 kg per week. A colony has 20 to 30 pups. They make a rookery on island cliffs. Pups are nursed 50 to 20 days.
They eat krill and silverfish and they eat cephalopod squid and octopuses. Sometimes they eat seals. They pull chine straped penguins under water, beat them to pieces, and then eat them.
The weddell seals habit is shellfish near cracks and holes in Antartica. It is the southern most seal in the world. They are often sene on pack ice. Often seen in McMurdo Sound. They live to be 22 years old.  They make interesting underwater sounds.

The Leopard Seal
By Jenna
The leopard seal is a water mammal. It is also known as the sea leopard. Females weight between 800 and 1,000 pound. And they eat fish, squid, krill and small seals. They like penguins the best. female seals don’t give birth in  the water. the babies  called ‘pups’’ eat krill to survive.   The leopard seals have  a muscular  some what reptilian head with a sinuous neck highly arched back and long powerful fliers. As one might expect leopard seals have impressively long sharp teeth which are  well-adapted for cutting and tearing the flesh of prey. The leopard seals main source of food is pengins and they can often be seen cruising in the vicinity of adelie Chinstrap and gentoo Cololnies. The only natural predator is the killer whale.

Southern Giant Petrel
 By: Samantha
The Southern Giant-Petrel is usually a grayish color but can range from black, brown to almost white. It is about 85-100 cm. long and has a wingspan from 180-205 cm. It has a large, deeply grooved, hooked bill with a greenish tip. They have webbed feet and thick feathers.  They also have large nostrils so their sense of smell is really strong for a bird.
The Southern Giant-Petrel, whose name means “Little Peter”, is a fantastic flyer and was named after the Apostle, Peter who walked across the water with Jesus. The giant petrel can throw up their stomach oil and food and spit it at predators. They prey on penguins and seals, eggs petrel chicks, fish, squid, and carcass remains. They are known as the scavengers, and are nicknamed stinkers. These birds can be very vicious and are often seen bloody from attacks on penguins or young chicks or from whale or seal flesh.
The Southern Giant-Petrels are not endangered. They lay their eggs that hatch 60 days later. They usually lay one white egg. The chicks fledge four months later. They are easily disturbed from their nests. The biggest danger for them is getting caught in long line fishing hooks from people fishing.
