School in Windham, Maine, raised money for the Windham Land Trust as
part of a Community Service Project- "Kids Care about the Earth".
We had a wonderful field trip to the Black Brook Preserve.Click

researched a Maine animal for our class notebook. They have written
clues so you can "Guess Their Animal". So have fun- read their
descriptions and try to guess which animal they had, then click to see
the answer! One animals is done twice. You can also print
out a worksheet
and do

1.
Guess
My Animal My animal is 26 in long. Its 2-3
pounds and is 6 to 7 inches
high. There fur is golden brown with dark feet and a pale face, and has
an
orange spot on the throat and chest. It eats hares, squirrels, birds,
eggs,
shrews, amphibians, insects and more. It has 2-3 young a year. It lives
in
hollow trees and rock crevices. The young get eaten by wolves and owls.
It
grows up to 26 in. Fishers, sables, weasels, mink, polecats
otters and
badgers are related to my animal. My animal is very rare.
2. Guess My Animal By Brandon B. My animal is
grayish white. They have hairless ears and
tails. They have a pink nose. It is 13-20 inches long. It is 4-15 lbs.
Their
habitat is wet wooded areas, and farmland. Its foods are worms,
reptiles, and
insects. They have one litter per year.{5-13 kits in a litter.} They
are less
active in the winter. Its predators are bobcat, coyote, and fisher. By Emily My animal’s weight
is 2-3 ounces. It is 9-11 inches long. It
has brown on his back and red on his chest. It lays 3-5 eggs. The eggs
are pale
blue. Babies hatch blind and featherless. It makes his nest out of mud,
grass,
and twigs. It eats earthworms, insects, fruits, and berries. Something
that eats
them are Coppers Hawk and sharp shinned Hawk. They mate in early spring. 4.

My Animal My animal is 8 to 10 inches long.
If it is
in the summer a
male it is dark brow. If it was a female it would be light brown and
they both
have white tip on there tail. In the winter they are both white and
have brow
tipped tails. They live on grass dirt
mud and rocks. Their enemies are bob cats foxes and hawks. They eat
frogs,
waterfowl, rabbits, chicken food. There have 3-9 babies at once. They
are born
blind and no fur. They are nocturnal and
diurnal-which means they come out in the day.

beetles,
nuts, and berries. I make a nest in a dead tree. I can be heard from

My animal’s length is 3½ feet long. Its color is white, yellow, and brown. Its eggs are 1-3 inches long. The colors of the eggs are dull white. It is located in tall trees such as pine trees. It eats fish, waterfowl, and small birds. The predators of the eggs are raccoons. It migrates to
western or southern states and on the coast.
Its habitat is in forested areas, near rivers, lakes, and on the coast.
It
became the nation’s symbol in 1782. 7. Guess My Animal By Greg It’s size is 11
inches and it comes out of
the egg in 18
weeks. It feeds on crayfish and dead animals. It has a shell. It is found in lakes, streams and marshes. Its
family lives in the water and the babies will come out of the egg in 9
to 18
weeks. The female will lay her eggs
twice a year on a beach. It feeds on
plant, fish, crayfish mussels, worms and dead animals. Its enemies are
the
raccoon, skunk, birds, and coyote. Its protection is its shell. It is named for
the color in its shell. It has webbed feet.
8. Guess My Animal By Meagan Its colors are
reddish brown with gray stripes. The colors
are light on the belly. It is 3-5 inches
long. Its tail is 3-4 inches long
too. It weighs 21/2 to 4 ½ oz. Its
call is a faast “chip-chip-chip”. It
lives in a hole in the round called a den. The
den has these rooms: pantry, bedroom. It
eats nuts, buds, berries, seeds, mice,
insect and bird eggs. It has 1-8 babies
in each litter. It has babies between April and July. The babies are
born blind
an d hairless. Its enemies are coyote, bobcat, fox, owl, weasel,
snakes, and
domestic cats. It hides in its burrow to escape enemies. It is able to
run 15
feet per second. It uses its cheeks to carry food back to the den.
9. Guess My Animal By
John My animal is 27-35 long and it
weights
28-75. It has to
grind its teeth every night and it has an extra eye lid. It is also
brown. Its tail is 15” long and 7”wide. It
has 3-5
kits at a time. The babies are 1 pound when they’re born. They can swim
soon
after they are born but never want to. Its home is like a dome shape.
It is
2-10’tall and 12-14’ wide. They eat trees. Their enemies are the bobcat
the
fisher and coyote. They slap the water with their tail. It is loud. My
animal
sprays their home to tell others that someone’s building this.

My Animal My animal’s size average is 6-26
inches
long. It is green,
brown or black with 3 yellow or orange stripes. It lives in marshes,
swamps,
forests, rocky ledges, gardens and fields. It lives all around Maine.
It eats
fish, insects, worms, toads, salamanders and mice. They have a hole in
the
ground fore a nest. It will have 20-40
live
young from July to September. Young are pencil thin and are 6 inches
long. It
hides in tall grass to hide from owls, fox and wolves. They hibernate
in the

11. Guess My Animal By: Chris My animal is 15 inches long it weighs 3-10 lbs they are black and white. They like woodland edges, farmland, overgrown pastures, and ravines with thick vegetation and suburbs. they eat mice, insects, fruit, eggs, and garbage. They live through out Maine and they mate February to April; with a gestation of 62-66 days. They have 5-7 kits born blind, wrinkled and toothless. Their predators are the great horned owl and bobcat. They protect themselves by spaying the enemy. 12. Guess My Animal By:
Jade My animal has a long tail. It weighs 800-1,800 pounds. It is 5-6 feet tall and is7-10 feet long. It has dark brown to black fur. Its nest is in trampled vegetation. It eats vegetation and aquatic plants. The female has 1-2 babies. The babies weigh 25-33 pounds. They are called calves. They are born reddish-brown. The calves are independent at one year. They are reddish-brown. Its enemies are wolf, black bear, and grizzly bears. Wolverines prey on young. They have a long tail and antlers. Their footprints are heart-shaped with a split hoof. It is the state mammal of Maine. They can run 35 miles per hour and can swim 10 miles.
Their
enemies are coyotes, bear, and humans. Humans are enemies because they
hunt
them. Bear are enemies because they prey on their young. Coyotes are
enemies
because coyotes eat them.
13. Guess My Animal By: Jordan S My animal is dark
reddish brown to black
rodent. It is 9-67
inches long. It weighs about 2-4 lbs. They are dark reddish brown to
black
rodent. They also have a rat like tail and it is almost hairless. It lives in a den underground. It builds on
platforms. You can find it in marshes, ponds, rivers, streams, lakes
and more.
Their lodges measure up to 2’ high and 4’ across. Their lodges are use
for
generations for 20-30 years. They eat Reeds, Frogs, Cray fish, Snails
and
Mussels. It protects in the winter it self by making a hole in the ice.
It has
2-3 litters a year. It has their babies in the spring time. It is born
blind.
It enemies are Bald Eagles, Great Horned Owl, and Red Tailed Hawk. It
also
makes a v shape when it is swimming

is colored tan or gray. They live in the woods and sleep in the trees.
They are
found in Maine. They hunt rabbits, mice, squirrels, and skunks. They
are born
blind and called kittens 4-6 are born at a time. They are hunted by
owls, coyotes,
and bears. 15. Guess My Animal By Jordi I grow from 37 to
41 inches long. My wings
are 55” wide. I
only way 2 pounds! I have a long S curved neck and long legs. My bill
is yellow
but I am all white. My favorite foods
are fish birds, amphibians, reptiles and small mammals. I live in a
nest. I lay
about 3 eggs that are a greenish bluish . 16.

My Animal My animal is found through out Maine. They hide
from: owls, bobcats, foxes, lynx and hawks. It has a litter of 4 to 7
babies.
They can leave their nest when they are 3-4 weeks old. Their
life span is about 2 years. They are very
helpful because they eat poison ivy. They do not change color during
the
winter.. It protects it self by hiding motionless in a hollowed out log.
