Legend of the Indian Steps

The Indian Steps or Lookout are located off Albion Road. The cut in the boulder is described as a "basalt dike" created by erosion and weathering.  It was probably improved upon by the early settlers which created the  more perfect steps seen today.  The ledge at the Indian Steps is thought to have been a lookout tower.  Legend has it that an Indian Princess is buried just beyond the stairsteps in an area circled with rocks.

Windham Hill Church

Windham Hill Church is the oldest church in Windham.  In December of 1743, this church was organized as an Orthodox Congregational Church and had 7 members.  The Reverend John Wright became the first settled minister.  The present church was built in 1834 .  It was the fifth to house this congregation. Its bell being the first bell on any church in Windham. It is located on the Windham Center Road.

Friends Church

The Friends Church is located on Route 202 near Windham Center.  The present meetinghouse was built in 1849.

The Society of Friends, or Quakers, were the second religious society formed in Windham. The Quaker  church was established in 1774.

During the Civil War, the  Society of Friends were  active in helping slaves to escape to  Canada.  The area known as "Popeville" on Pope Road had several homes designated as "stations" on the Underground Railroad.
