  • Help your child find a good place to read-good light is important.
  • Read with your child and encourage them to tell you about the story.

  • Remind your child the Librarian is there to help if you need assistance
in choosing a book or for any library-related task.
Dear Parents,

Children can bring home a book from our school library.  All students will be attending library weekly and will be allowed to check out one book each week, provided the previous book has been returned. Students will have library the same day and time each week. We no longer stamp a due date in the books, however, a sticker has been placed on your child’s “Eagle News” envelope letting you know what day your child’s library book is to be returned to school.

Each child has been provided with a plastic bag to help protect the library book from damage. Please remind them to transport their library book to and from school in this bag. If the bag should become torn or lost, please replace it with one from home. If you have extra plastic bags that you would like to donate to the library, we would love to have them.

If a book is lost or damaged, we will send a bill home requesting replacement cost. Students will not be allowed to bring another library book home until the lost or damaged one has been paid for; however, at the discretion of the classroom teacher, a student may be allowed to sign out a book and keep it at school.

A recognition chart will be kept in the library for each class. If all books for that class are returned on time, the class receives a star and the class is recognized at the end of the day over the intercom. All books must be returned to the library on the date they are due. If a child wishes to renew a book, they still must return it  to the library to renew it for another week. If a book is not returned because a student is absent on library day, this will not be counted against the class.

A second award is for individual recognition. Students will be allowed to place a stamp on the back of their library card each time they return their library book on time. When a student has accumulated eight stamps, they will be awarded a bookmark. Each additional eight stamps will earn them a chance to choose a prize from our treasure chest. Students can earn additional stamps by electing to write a book review.  This is strictly voluntary and is limited to one book review per week. A book review form has been attached to this letter and additional copies will be available in the library.

Donations made to the Windham Primary School Adopt-A-Book Fund allow us to purchase books in addition to our regular budget. Donations of $15.00 or more allow the donor to choose the title to be purchased and the book will have a bookplate placed inside the front cover recognizing the donor or their designee. This is a great way to honor a family member, special friend or teacher. Donations of lesser amounts will be deposited into the Adopt-A-Book Fund and will be combined with other donations to purchase books as well.

We are always looking for parent volunteers to help us out in the library. If you are interested, please give us a call at 892-1840. Even one hour each week would be helpful. Examples of volunteer responsibilities are: putting books back on the shelves, straightening shelves, preparing bulletin board materials, filing catalogues, looking for misplaced books, stamping new books, etc.

We look forward to an exciting year with your students and invite you to stop in and visit our school library.

Sincerely,
