Enrichment Program
Under Maine law, children eligible for gifted services are "those children who excel, or have the potential to excel, beyond their age peers, in the regular school program, to the extent that they need and can benefit from programs for the gifted and talented." At Windham Primary School, these students are served through Enrichment. The law allows us to serve up to 5% of the student population.
Enrichment offers three types of enrichment for our K-3 learners: whole class enrichment, enrichment cycles for recommended students, and individual support at teacher request.
Every classroom (grades 1-3) participates in two sessions (40 minutes per session) of whole class enrichment, based on a chosen topic selected by the classroom teacher. This opportunity allows all students to experience an Enrichment lesson, view the Enrichment classroom, and get to know the Gifted and Talented teacher. Our kindergarten students participate in one whole class enrichment lesson in the spring.
Enrichment cycles are six weeks in length with classes meeting for 40 minutes, twice per week. Teachers use data collected on scale for identifying gifted and talented students along with NWEA scores when considering recommending students for an enrichment cycle. These cycles focus on literature, writing, math or science. In addition, teachers may recommend students for individual support to modify exceptional students' regular curricula.
